How to Unlock RDR2 Fast Travel: The Complete Guide
What is Fast Travel in RDR2?
Red Dead Redemption 2 features a massive, breathtaking world. While riding your horse is immersive, sometimes you just need to get somewhere quickly. This is where the rdr2 fast travel system comes in. However, it isn’t available from the start. You must first unlock it through specific camp upgrades.
Essentially, this system allows you to instantly travel to previously discovered towns and key locations directly from your camp. Consequently, it saves you a significant amount of time, especially for long journeys across the map. Let’s dive into how you can unlock this crucial feature.
How to Unlock RDR2 Fast Travel from Your Camp
Unlocking the primary fast travel method requires a bit of story progression and some cash. You need to invest in your gang’s camp through the ledger. Follow these simple steps.
Step 1: Progress to Chapter 2
First, you need to play through the main story until you reach Chapter 2: Horseshoe Overlook. After completing the mission “Money Lending and Other Sins” for Leopold Strauss, the camp ledger will become available. This ledger is key to all camp upgrades.
Step 2: Upgrade Dutch’s Lodging
Next, find the ledger next to the camp’s collection box. Your first mandatory upgrade is for Dutch’s lodging. Select the “Lodgings” section and purchase the “First Things First” upgrade for Dutch’s tent. This will cost you $220. Furthermore, this upgrade inspires other gang members to contribute more to the camp funds.
Step 3: Upgrade Arthur’s Lodging
After upgrading Dutch’s tent, a new option will appear. You can now upgrade Arthur’s lodging. This is the final step. The upgrade is called “Next in Line” and costs $325. Purchasing this will unlock a fast travel map on the back of Arthur’s wagon or tent.
How to Use the Camp Map
Once unlocked, simply walk to the map at your lodging. You can then select any previously visited town or significant location to travel there instantly. Remember, this is a one-way trip from your camp to a destination. You cannot fast travel back to camp.
Other Ways to Travel Quickly in Red Dead Redemption 2
Besides the camp map, there are other methods for getting around the world more efficiently. These options are available much earlier in the game.
Use Stagecoaches and Trains
Stagecoaches and trains are excellent public transport options. You can buy a ticket at any train station or post office with a stagecoach icon on the map. They function as a form of fast travel, taking you between towns for a small fee. However, you cannot use them if you have a bounty in the destination’s state.
- Trains: Cover large distances and connect major towns.
- Stagecoaches: Offer more destinations than trains, including smaller settlements.
Set Up a Temporary Camp
You can also set up a small, personal camp almost anywhere in the wilderness from your item wheel. While it doesn’t let you teleport, it does allow you to cook, craft, and, most importantly, sleep. Sleeping will advance time, which can be useful. Moreover, a new camp can serve as a closer respawn point if things go wrong.
Try the Cinematic Camera
Finally, for a hands-off journey, you can use the cinematic camera. Set a waypoint on your map, start riding on a road towards it, and then switch to cinematic mode. Arthur will automatically ride to the destination. While not instant, it allows you to sit back and enjoy the incredible scenery without actively steering your horse.
